OKLAHOMA CITY , Ok – May 30, 2022 – As the congratulatory hugs and kisses came crashing down on 95-year-old owner Elizabeth Logan in the winner’s circle after her 2-year-old gelding Tres Crystals won the Grade 1, $1,112,440 Heritage Place Futurity, she took time out to do one thing.
As they took the winner’s circle photo, the curly gray-haired owner from Haskell, Okla., reached over, took Tres Crystals’ head in her hands and kissed him on the forehead as she tried to hold back the tears. Her undefeated juvenile gelded son of Tres Seis, out of the Walk Thru Fire mare Crystal Sola, had just put $467,225 into her bank account. She tried to hold back her tumbling hair in her eyes as she was interviewed after the race.
“I look so ratty,” she said. “I don’t have the words to express how I feel. It’s unbelievable. What do I say? I feel so blessed.”
Tres Crystals became the first horse ever to win the Oklahoma Futurity and then go on to win the Heritage Place Futurity, since both races have been contested at Remington Park. He now stands at four wins in four tries with $658,167 earned.
Logan purchased Tres Crystals for $30,000 at the 2021 Ruidoso Select Yearling Sale. It was likely the best $30,000 she spent since putting a chunk of cash down for her 2018 Lincoln car that keeps her tooling around Haskell.
Trainer Dee Keener and jockey Bryan Candanosa combined for the victory and were thrilled to win this race for the first time.
“All I can say is, ‘I WON THE HERITAGE PLACE!’ “ Keener yelled afterward. “It has been a real pleasure with this horse. He is a racehorse. We’re going to take him to Ruidoso for the Rainbow and All American Futurity trials.”
Candanosa, only 20 years old, said it was a blessing to have this kind of opportunity.
“I am honored to be on this horse,” he said. “He was really calm today, but once he stood in the gate, he told me he would run his race. I just trusted God.”
It also was the first win in the stakes series for Logan.
Tres Crystals, bred in Texas by Simmons Racing, covered the 350 yards in :17.852 for an 84 speed index on the fast track. He was sent off as the 5-2 wagering favorite in the race and paid $7.80 to win, $3.40 to place and $3 to show.
Tres Crystals and is connections had to wait for photo-finish verification of their big win. They scored by a nose over the hard-charging Take a Swig of This (6-1), finishing finished three-thousandths of a second apart at the wire. One Fine V (11-1) ran third, another half-length back.
The final order of finish for the Futurity was: Tres Crystals (5-2), Take a Swig of This (6-1), One Fine V (11-1), Hooked N Gone (8-1), Teller Ima Eagle (10-1), Mistakin Idenity (30-1), Sunday Sylence (25-1), Fancy Scarface (7-2), Turcotte (9-1) and Ivory Senator (4-1, second favorite).
