Oklahoma City, Oklahoma – January 23, 2023 — With a $1.6 Million earning five-year- old gelding that won two Grade I stakes in 2022 being repurchased for $1,150,000 and a two-time AQHA Running Champion and three-year-old Appaloosa colt that had earned $40,000 last year each bringing $200,000, this past week’s Heritage Place Winter Mixed Sale saw 19 horses sell for $100,000 or more.
The three-day sale saw horses that entered the ring at the Oklahoma City facility sell for an announced average of $22,638 and a gross of $15,680,600. The median was $15,000.
According to Heritage Place general manager Spence Kidney the average was up 5% over this sale last January and 89% of the horses offered were sold.
Instygator, the gelding that raced for Barboza Racing Corp. last year, entered the ring Saturday afternoon and exited with what must be a record buy-back figure.
The winner of 10 of his 18 career starts, Instygator opened 2022 with a win in The Championship at Sunland Park G1 (over eventual World Champion Empressum) on January 2, won the Refrigerator Handicap G1 in November and was fourth behind Danjer, KJ Desparado and Flash Bak (again in The Championship at Sunland Park) on December 31. Instygator was consigned to the sale by Dunn Ranch, agent.
The first of the $200,000 sale toppers was Jess Savin Candy $1,062,000, the Champion Two- Year-Old and Champion Two- Year-Old Gelding of 2021 that was owned by Bill Dale and John Streelman. Handled for this sale by Lazy E Ranch, LLC, the Jess Good Candy gelding was trained by John Stinebaugh when he won the $1,000,000 Ruidoso Futurity G1 and the $1,000,000 Rainbow Futurity G1 before sustaining an injury during the $3,000,000 All American Futurity G1 as he was attempting to become the breed’s second two-year-old winner of the Ruidoso Triple Crown. In four starts in 2022, his biggest payday was a third in the $100,000 Ruidoso Invitational Stakes. Jess Savin Candy was purchased by Carmen Arevalo—HV Ranch of Colorado.
Hes Bulletproof, who is a son of Champion runner and Champion sire Hes Relentless, brought $200,000 from Lisa Miladinovich of Nebraska. An earner of $46,000 as a two-year-old in 2022, the multiple stakes winner won four times while racing in mixed company at Lone Star, Remington, Fair Meadows and Will Rogers for Jeff Adams and trainer Dee Keener.
The $200,000 price tag at Heritage last Friday afternoon, just 15 head in front of Jess Savin Candy, has to be some kind of record.
The top selling mare during the sale at $180,000 was Remember Me Jessie, an unraced 11-year-old daughter of Mr Jess Perry and broodmare de luxe Remember Me Rose. Consigned by Grant Farms, LLC, Remember Me Jessie was purchased by Luis Roberto Lozano of Texas. Remember Me Jessie, who sold open, reportedly has a pair of current two-year-olds by Freighttrain B, an unregistered foal of 2022 by The Louisiana Cartel and has three foals this year due by Favorite Cartel and Freighttrain B.
Seventeen of the 19 horses listed as selling for $100,000 or more raced in 2022. The other two were mares.
The top selling yearling at $75,000 was a first crop filly by Champion Uncle D. Consigned by Cavenaugh Quarter Horses, LLC, the January 18, 2022 filly is out of Valiant Hero’s multiple stakes winning daughter Weetonas Lafawn $180,000.
Tom Lepic of Iowa paid $90,000 for the top selling foal-in-utero, who is by Apollitical Jess and out of Sandy June Bug (by Blushing Bug). From the family of famous horses from MJ Farms, Sandy June Bug has already produced four stakes winners including Colby James $550,000, Daddys Blushing $222,000 and Junior June Bug $289,000.
The leading buyer in dollar volume was Luis Roberto Lozano with $527,700 for nine head, edging Taos River Ranch with five head for $519,000. Rachuan Suarez led the Top 10 buyers in number purchased at 14 and spent $339,500.
