OKLAHOMA CITY, OK—JUNE 1, 2013—Remington Park’s “Mega-Card” of racing Saturday night, the richest overall program ever presented in track history, featured a big-money upset in the richest race of the season.
Big Biz Perry broke well from post position number one, then battled to hold off the even-money wagering favorite Hes Relentless to win the Grade 1, $910,260 Heritage Place Futurity.
Owned by Jose Espinosa of Edinburg, Texas, Big Biz Perry is trained by Trey Wood who saddled the winner of the biggest Remington Park race for the second consecutive year. In 2012, he sent BP Cartels Alibi to victory. The repeat win in the big race came along on short notice as he just took over the conditioning of the 2-year-old filly recently.
“We really didn’t know her until she got here,” Wood noted. “Jose sent her to us from Sam Houston and we didn’t have her in Houston. She looked good but didn’t get away in the consolation there (in April). She got away good in the trials here and she got away super-good tonight and that’s what won the race for her.”
Ridden by Cipriano Vidana, Big Biz Perry was away at 29-1 odds and paid $60.80 for the win, $14.80 to place and $7.60 to show. Even-money favorite Hes Relentless was coming on strongly but could not reach the winner, settling for second a head behind the victor, paying $4.20 to win and $3.20. Wagon Tales was along for third and paid $3.80 to show.
Big Biz Perry set a new stakes record in the Heritage Place Futurity by covering the 350 yards in :17.31 seconds over a fast track. A Texas-bred by Burnett Ranches, Big Biz Perry is by Mr Jess Perry from the Shazoom mare Big Bizooms, a half-sister to the dam of AQHA Racing Champion 2-Year-Old and All American Futurity(G1) winner Runnning Brook Gal. She was a $20,000 Ruidoso Select Sale yearling.
The winner’s share of $383,309 ups the career earnings for Big Biz Perry to $393,947. She has now won three races from four starts and is a perfect two-for-two after winning her trial and the Heritage Place Futurity at Remington Park.
Aside from Wood, the Heritage Place win is the first for both Espinosa and Vidana.
