VINTON, LA—MAY 13, 2016—After recording the second fastest qualifying time for Friday night’s Old South Derby on April 22, Jorge Aguilera’s Sr Inseperable proved fastest in the $71,075 final with jockey Damian Martinez in the saddle Friday night.
After breaking from the gate in third position, Sr Inseperable quickly moved to the front and vied for the lead while dueling with Politically Corrupt, who went off as the 9-5 wagering favorite. As the field of 10 neared the finish line of the 350-yard race Sr Inseperable gained a neck advantage of fast-closing Paint Me a Storm while Politically Corrupt wound up third, another ¾ of a length behind the top pair.
Sr Inseperable, who is trained by Adrian Huitron, covered the distance of the Old South Derby in a time of 17.614 while running on fast track. That time equaled a speed index of 88.
The victory by Sr Inseperable was the second of her six-race career and she earned $35,538 for the effort. She has now banked a total of $41,814.
Sr Inseperable is a 3-year-old bay filly by Inseperable, out of the Dean Miracle mare Sr Shesa Dean. She was bred in Oklahoma by Andrew T. Smith.Sent to the gate at odds of 5-1, Sr Inseperable returned $12.80 to win, $6.20 to place and $3.60 to show. Paint Me a Storm was worth $5.20 to place and $3.40 to show. Politically Corrupt was worth $2.80 to show.
Winners Racing’s Paint Me A Storm earned $12,083 for his second place finish. Kenneth Weeks saddled the Red Storm Cat gelding out of the Pyc Paint Your Wagon mare Paint Me Golden. Bred by Andy Golden and Randy Hill, the multiple stakes-placed runner has earned $44,103. John Hamilton was riding.
Posttime favorite Politically Corrupt dueled early but hung late for owner Double H Racing Investment LLC and trainer Elpidio Luna, Jr. Manuel Gutierrez had the riding assignment aboard the stakes-placed son of leading third crop sire Apollitical Jess. Politically Corrupt pocketed $7,108 for the effort to bring his bankroll to $22,238.
One Tough Rio, Catching Fire Corona, Dont Lett Her Down, Seis To Temp, Aw Naw and Cartel GIgi completed the field.
In addition to his win in the Old South Derby, Martinez also won two other races on the program to score a triple on the night. Martinez now has 13 wins on the season and is second in the standings to currently leading rider David Alvarez.
Delta Downs will wrap up its fourth week of live American Quarter Horse racing on Saturday night with another 10-race program set to begin at 6:15 pm. Saturday night’s action include the $88,935 Old South Futurity and the $50,000 Vinton Stakes.
