September 23, 2019 – With the 545 head bringing a total of $13,005,300, the September 19-20 Heritage Place Yearling Sale posted an all-time record average of $21,525.
The average was an 18% jump over the record average of $18,306 that was posted in 2018. The 2018 average was a 12% increase over the previous record that was set in 2016.
To get to the $21,525 average, 15 horses sold for $75,000 or more, with the top three going for $180,000, $100,000 and $100,000. In the 2018 version of the nation’s largest yearling sale in volume, only eight head topped $75,000 with the four at the top bringing $175,000, $170,000, $140,000 and $120,000.
Joe Rios and Bobby Simmons bought this year’s No. 1 seller at Heritage Place, picking a Tres Seis filly consigned by Marty Powers for Flag Ranch. The duo pooled resources to pay $180,000 for the March 11, 2018 filly out of stakes placed winner and multiple stakes producer Brown Eye Suze $110,000.
The sorrel filly named Sixy Brown Eyes is a half-sister to 2018 West Texas Futurity winner Suze Returns $404,000 and 2019 West Texas Futurity placed Return Of Brown Eyes $92,000. Sixy Brown Eyes also is a full sister to G1 finalist Brown Tres Seis $78,000 and a half-sister to 2019 two-year-old winner Louisiana Brown Eyes $12,000.
The top-seller’s second dam is a full sister to Remington Park Futurity winner Bullet Bullion $220,000 and to the dam of All American Derby winner and Ruidoso Downs 440- yard track record setter Snow Big Deal $405,000.
Apollitical Flash, an Apollitical Jess colt foaled January 25, 2018, sold for $100,000 less than an hour before the sale concluded.
Out of the multiple stakes winning and multiple stakes producing Chicks Beduino Jr. mare Chalala $125,000, Apollitical Flash was consigned by James Ranch as agent for Rancho El Cabresto, Inc., and was purchased by Cavenaugh Quarter Horses, LLC, of Arkansas. The colt is a full brother to the stakes placed winners Chalala Jess $79,000 and Apollitical Seven $26,000.
La Feliz Montana, LLC, paid $100,000 for Lethal Glory, a February 26, 2018 filly consigned by Lazy E Ranch, LLC, as agent for breeder P.K. Thomas.
Lethal Glory is a full sister to 2014 All American Futurity winner JM Miracle $1,508,000 and a half-sister to 2019 stakes winner Lethal Lil $280,000, who won the Mr Jess Perry Stakes (Ruidoso Derby consolation) and last year ran third in the Los Alamitos Two Million Futurity. Lethal Lil was demoted from her second place finish in last year’s Rainbow Futurity.
Lethal Glory’s dam is the RG1 winning Dean Miracle mare Lethal Delight $454,000. Lethal Delight is a half-sister to Volcom’s 2016 Champion Three-Year-Old Filly Volcom Bay $426,000.
In 2018 when the catalog included 783 head (120 head more than this year’s offering), 42 brought $50,000 or more. This year, 44 head brought $50,000 or more.
The median this year was $15,500 compared to $12,250 in 2018.
That means the median jumped 27% over 2018 . . . or $3,250. Hence, the big jump in the record average.
Rachuan Suarez of Mexico was the leading buyer in both horses purchased (25) and money spent ($362,800).
Bobby Cox was the leading individual consignor with 33 head bringing $895,000. Lazy E Ranch, traditionally the sale’s leading consignor as an agent, once again led all consignors. Lazy E banked nearly $400,000 for McColee Land & Livestock, more than $200,000 for
P.K. Thomas and more than $700,000 as a general agent. Marty Powers got $582,000 for the 14 head he sold for Flag Ranch, LLC.
For some reason, of the 15 horses that sold for $75,000 or more, 12 of them were sold on Friday.
Spence Kidney, Heritage Place’s general manager, said, “We had a big finish to the yearling sale today (Friday).
“The last session averaged $22,581 which is 10% higher than yesterday’s (Thursday) average. Overall the sale finished with an average of $21,525, which is an increase of 18% compared to last year. 89% of the horses offered were sold.”
Sunday afternoon, Kidney told TRACK that the Fall event had “650, give or take, 3 or 4.”
“We have a great catalog of yearlings to offer at the Fall Mixed Sale (November 1-2) with more than 250 to choose from, in addition to the Mixed Session as well,” Kidney said.
The yearlings in the Fall Mixed include some 30 Thoroughbreds and a smattering of Paints.
