OKLAHOMA CITY – May 11, 2020 – The highly-touted Trump My Record appeared to have all chances at qualifying for the final of the Grade 2, $248,000 Heritage Place Derby destroyed at the beginning of his trial. However, he still had the bulk of the 400-yard distance for the rest of the story.
Trump My Record broke dead last in his trial, the first of five on Sunday night at Remington Park, and trailed the field for the first half of the 400-yard race. Like a rocket turning on its afterburners, he altered his path around another rival. Finding a sliver of space, jockey James Flores he steered the talented gelding to victory, passing all of his foes in a flash.
Some may have wondered with all that trouble, whether the three-time stakes winner’s time would be fast enough to qualify among the top 10 in five trials Sunday night. Not only did this 3-year-old son of Apollitical Blood, out of the PYC Paint Your Wagon mare Breck N Records, qualify, but his time of 19.544 seconds for the distance was the fastest of the night with a 94 speed index.
As a 2-year-old, Trump My Record won the Harrah’s Futurity at Louisiana Downs in Bossier City, shipped to Houston and won the Sam Houston Futurity at Sam Houston Race Park, and then wound up his juvenile season with a victory in the $905,000 Texas Classic Futurity at Lone Star Park in Grand Prairie, Texas.
There’s no telling how fast Trump My Record would have run in his trial had he gotten a clean trip. As it was, he got up by a head over runner-up Uncle Eds Idea, with another nose back to third-place finisher Mr Dillard. A Painted Dynasty completed the top four in the first heat, all qualifying in the top 10 for the final.
Trump My Record improved to 11 starts, nine wins and one second for a total bankroll of $796,937. He pocketed $5,784 in the derby trial win for owner Crown Horse Racing of Frisco, Texas. Trained by Jose Sanchez III, Trump My Record was a bargain $10,700 purchase in the Texas Quarter Horse Association 2018 Yearling sale.
It was leading rider James Flores’ first time on the horse. The trainer’s brother, Eddie, had ridden him in his previous starts. In two nights, all Flores did was qualify the fastest horse for the Derby and the fastest for the Grade 1 Heritage Place Futurity, Aint She Tempting.
Trump My Record went off at 1-2 odds and returned $3, $2.20 and $2.10 to his backers. He was bred in Texas by Fulton Quien Sabe Ranches.
